FAQ: What To Expect Before, During, and After Hardwood Floor Refinishing
If you’re interested in finding the best way to refinish hardwood floors, you’ve already started thinking about making one of the best possible investments into your home or loft’s value. About 94% of real estate pros recommend spending more on floors when updating a space. For an estimated average investment of $600 to $900, brokers report that the return in value comes in at up to $2,000.
But before you choose a commercial wood flooring company to tackle the job, it’s important to know exactly what to expect so you aren’t taken by surprise. Refinishing hardwood floors requires particular skills, and not every company is up for the job. Here are some answers to common questions about refinishing hardwood floors.
How long does the process take?
The exact length of the process is highly dependent on whether you’re using a water-based or oil-based polyurethane; oil finished wood floors usually take a bit longer to dry. Archetypal has a unique light-cured, low VOC, oil-based wood refinishing product that cures almost instantly. Where a typical cure time can take up to a week, the Archetypal cure process is completed in less than 24 hours allowing you to move furniture back in place, walk on it, and put down rugs with little to no delay.
Is there anything I need to do to prepare?
Even if you have intricate mosaic floor patterns that need refinishing, you won’t need to do anything besides get out of the way. Most companies that refinish hardwood floors are fully qualified and trained to complete all of the prep work involved with the job. This means they can handle every step of the job from start to finish. Although, if you’d rather do the prep work yourself, most companies won’t have a problem with light cleaning ahead of time.
If necessary, make plans to avoid the affected areas during the refinishing process.
What should I plan to do with my furniture during the refinishing process?
This is basically a matter of personal preference. Many companies are happy to assist with moving furniture to another area of the home. Sometimes, the work can be done in two separate installments to accommodate your furniture and foot traffic needs. Communicate these needs with your contractors and they’ll be happy to oblige.
Ultimately, knowing the answers to these common questions about wood floor refinishing is the best way to know what to expect during the process.

This is something that I will make sure to remember because I’m planning to refinish my house’s hardwood floor, but I’m worried that I don’t have a place to stay for the entire duration that refinishing is being completed. I will make sure to consider all your tips on hardwood refinishing.

We want to get a better understanding of what the process will entail. I like that you mentioned how long it will take and we will be sure to wait 24 hours before moving furniture back in place.

May 1, 2018, 6:52 pm REPLYIt’s good to know that most companies that refinish hardwood floors are fully qualified and trained to complete all of the prep work involved with the job. I have a long stretch of hardwood floor that I’m looking at getting refinished because it’s been walked on so much and beginning to splinter and I worry about it. I’m hoping to hire a good hardwood refinishing company that can make it look brand new again.

June 4, 2018, 2:37 pm REPLYMy wife and I want to install new hardwood floors this year, so thanks for sharing this. I like your point about how many companies are also trained for the prep work before the job. We’ll have to find a company that can help us get our floor ready for replacement.
